Grant Update: ‘Thinking Classroom’ in Middle School Science

Middle school science classrooms are becoming more interactive and student‑centered through the Thinking Classroom model.

This project supports active learning by providing large whiteboards and markers that allow students to work together in small groups. Rather than passively taking notes, students design experiments, solve problems, and discuss scientific ideas while standing and sharing their thinking in real time. Making thinking visible encourages collaboration, reflection, and deeper understanding.

Teachers have already seen increased engagement, stronger teamwork, and greater student enthusiasm during science lessons. Funded through a grant supporting four middle school science classrooms, this initiative impacts approximately 400 students each year and will continue to benefit future classes.

By encouraging discussion, risk‑taking, and perseverance, the Thinking Classroom model reflects how science works beyond the classroom. This project helps students build the critical thinking and collaboration skills they need for long‑term success. We are grateful to our donors for supporting innovative science learning experiences.
